Historic Apples

The grounds of Gilbert White’s House contain many older varieties of apple which you are unlikely to find in the shops. Now is the time to come and explore!

A full trail is available at reception, and we have apples for you to sample.

1. Golden Pippin

1629 or earlier, keeps shape when cooked.
Intense brisk taste, sweet. Hogg (1860) called it
‘the Queen of dessert apples’.

2. London Pippin

A very old variety 16th century or earlier, they
have a sweet nutty taste. The fruit have 5
prominent ribs round the crown, hence its
synonym Five Crown Pippin.

3. Knobby Russet

Known by Gilbert White as Knobbed Russetings.
these fruit have a great taste despite their
unattractive appearance.

4. French Crab

Late 1700’s Possibly Gilbert White’s ‘Winters
Queening’. Keeps very well, pleasantly
sub-acidic taste, a parent of the Granny Smith
apple.

5. King of Pippins

Discovered in the 1770’s this fruit has over 100
synonyms. The flesh is firm, juicy and sweet
with bitter undertones.

6. Blenheim Orange

Discovered in 1740 by Kemster growing against
a wall of Blenheim Park. The apple’s hard wood
was used for making railway cogs. The fruit has
an addictively sweet acidic taste.

7. Lemon Pippin

1744 or earlier, they were grown for market and
recommended for drying as the slices do not
discolour. A lemon-like look to the fruit. Quite
Sweet, with lemony acidity.
