SELBOURNE MAP

Sustainability

Gilbert White loved the natural world and we want to do all we can to protect it too. There are ways to get to Gilbert White’s House & Garden’s car-free below.

Cyclists

There are bicycle racks and if they are full plenty of places to lean bicycles & be able to lock them up.

Bus

The 38 bus between Alton and Petersfield runs through Selborne, our nearest bus stop is the Selborne Arms. Between February and September 2024 the diverted 13 bus service between Basingstoke and Whitehill/Bordon. Please always check before you travel as timings may change.

Train

Our nearest train stations are Alton and Liss. Both have regular trains to and from London Waterloo, as well as bus links to Selborne

Foot

There are many footpaths linking Selborne with nearby towns and villages. Look out for the Hangers Way which links Selborne with Alton and Petersfield. Find out more here: https://www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/countryside/walking/hangersway

By Car or Coach

For those coming by car, the car park is up behind Selborne Arms pub car park GU34 3BN. Selborne is on the B3006 which is accessible via the A31 and the A3.

If you are coming by coach there are coach parking bays in our carpark, please ask your driver to turn off the engine during your visit. We can provide vouchers for any coach driver for both our café and La Luna on the High Street.

As a visitor to Gilbert White’s House & Gardens you can benefit from free parking when we are open (parking charges apply out of hours for all, including annual pass holders).

All visitors (including annual pass holders) MUST hand in their car registration to Reception every time they visit the site and can only access free parking in our car park during our opening hours.

There is a small car parking charge to those NOT using the museum or café. For those not visiting the museum or café there are 13 signs around the car park that will explain how to pay.  If the car park is full we will endeavor to open the Ewell field for additional parking. This is will be clearly sign posted. Please note it is not always possible for us to open the field for additional parking, as it is weather dependent, and also sometimes hired by private parties.

There is no general visitor parking directly outside the Museum; a car park is provided approximately 50 metres along the High Street. Limited blue badge parking is located in the car park. However, there is one accessible parking bay, located on the opposite side of the road from the Museum, next to the Plestor (village green). We regret that this space is not bookable in advance.

I’m in Selborne how do I find the House?!

Our carpark is located behind the Selborne Arms pub, from the car park you can follow the gravel path which will lead you to the house and gardens, from that point follow the signs to the house and garden.

If you are on the High Street we are on the opposite side of the road from the church and the Jubilee Tap. On the same side of the road as the Selborne Arms, lookout for two double black gates that open out into a courtyard.

I am trying to find the Gilbert White Field Studies Centre or attending a event at the Barn.

The FSC (Field Studies Centre) and barn are one and the same and is located at the very back of the carpark opposite the entrance.
